What's new on Netflix, Crave, Amazon, Disney+, Apple TV+ and YouTube in January

Look over there. That dent in the couch? The one that smoothed into a perfect divot during the holidays. It isn’t going anywhere.

Thanks to the plentiful selection of new shows and films headed your way in 2020, streaming services plan to keep you right where they want you: glued to the boob tube, or your phone, or your iPad.

But what else are you going to do? Baby, it’s cold outside.

Netflix has heaps of new programming, including Adam Sandler’s highly-anticipated dramatic turn as a scheming jeweller in Uncut Gems (Jan. 31). The streamer will also get into the reality TV game with The Circle (Jan. 1), a Big Brother-esque series that integrates social media into a game that bills itself as “the ultimate popularity contest” to win $100,000. Meanwhile, Sherlock creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss offer up a new take on Dracula (Jan. 1), while the provocative 10-episode drama Messiah re-imagines what would happen if Christ-like figure appeared today and started performing miracles.

Elsewhere, the witching hour is back when The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina returns for its third season (Jan. 24).

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are back as Grace and Frankie (Jan. 15), playing women wrestling with life now that their husbands (played by Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston, respectively) have revealed they are gay.

Over at Crave, Larry David once again plays a fictionalized version of himself when Curb Your Enthusiasm returns (Jan. 19).

Season 10 will “continue to prove how seemingly trivial details of one’s day-to-day life — a cold cup of coffee, a stained shirt, a missing toothbrush — can precipitate a chain of misfortune to hilarious effect.”

The past few years have been a boon for Stephen King fans and Crave will continue that tradition in 2020 with the small-screen adaptation of his supernatural thriller The Outsider (Jan. 12). Jason Bateman plays Terry Maitland, a man accused of the brutal murder of a young boy, even though he was caught on camera in a different town when the killing occurred. Ben Mendelsohn, Cynthia Erivo, Mare Winningham, Bill Camp, and Julianne Nicholson co-star.

King has already hailed the 10-episode series as “one of the best adaptations” of his work.

Star Trek: Picard will beam onto Crave screens Jan. 24, with Patrick Stewart back as the iconic Jean-Luc Picard in this Star Trek: The Next Generation spinoff.

Finally, film greats Jude Law and John Malkovich follow up 2017’s The Young Pope with The New Pope (Jan. 13), a new limited-series instalment that dives into the inner workings of the Vatican.

The Bourne universe is born again when Amazon Prime Video unveils Treadstone. From the world of Robert Ludlum’s novels, agents across the globe are “awakening” to resume deadly missions. Jeremy Irvine (War Horse, Mamma Mia 2) stars.

Amazon will also debut Russell Peters’ new stand-up special Deported, which was recorded in front of a sold-out audience at Mumbai’s NSCI Stadium.

Now that Season 1 of The Mandalorian has ended, Disney’s January streaming releases will centre on a handful of new series, including Diary of a Future President and Short Circuit, as well as movies from its vast catalogue, including Big Hero 6 (Jan. 7) and Aladdin (Jan. 8).

Justin Bieber also joins the streaming game, returning to where it all started: YouTube. The heartthrob will give fans a full-circle look at his life in

Finally, Apple TV+ will continue to offer up weekly episodes of its horror hit Servant ahead of its finale Jan. 17 and Little America, a new half-hour anthology series from Big Sick writers Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon.
