A man was shot and killed at a Malvern highrise on New Year’s Eve — the final gun murder in a year that saw a record-high number of shootings in Toronto.

Officers responded to an underground parking garage at an apartment building on Wingarden Ct., near Neilson Rd. and Crow Tr., just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to Toronto Police.

The man’s injuries were initially not thought to be life-threatening.

“We had a call for a man shot; it was a bit of a mess,” Const. David Hopkinson said Wednesday. “At first, we were told the injuries were non-life threatening, but he deteriorated on the way to hospital (and died).”

Police say empty shell casings were located in the area of the shooting.

The victim’s name has not been released and no suspect description was immediately available.

Homicide detectives are now investigating the deadly shooting — believed to be the city’s 77th murder of 2019 and the 44th gun murder of the year. In 2018, there was a record number of murders — 96 homicides — in Toronto with gunfire claiming 51 victims.

The latest police numbers (as of Dec. 31) show there were 484 shootings in the city in 2019 — up 13% from the previous record-high 427 shootings Toronto experienced a year earlier.

And there were 764 victims of gun violence last year — up 25% from Toronto’s previous record-high of 610 set in 2018.
